What you need to know about tanning
Are sunbeds safe for the skin?
For as long as we can remember, we have been told that sunbed use is bad for you, that sunbeds will no doubt lead to skin cancer, and that you should be ashamed if you choose to use sunbeds.
While most people are familiar with the dangers of spending too much time in the sun, some feel tanning beds are a safe way to gain an attractive tan and may even think that there are some health benefits to using tanning beds. When deciding whether to tan in a tanning bed, it is important to remember the health risks as well as potential health benefits.
Moderate tanning โ for those individuals who can develop a tan โ is the smartest way to maximise the potential benefits of sun exposure while minimising the possible risks associated with too much or too little sunlight.

How do you choose the length of the session?
ย
Like most reputable tanning salons, we recommend you visit the salon frequently in shorter sessions but do not visit more than once in 48 hours. You will then build your colour slowly and safely. Consistency is the key to building a base tan โ but if you wait too long between sessions, your tan will fade.
Gradually building a base tan protects your skin from sunburn and decreases risk, especially if you are fair-skinned. Not only is it helpful in preventing sunburn, but tanning also provides much-needed Vitamin D in its most natural form.
Tips for ensuring beautiful tan
Before the Tan:
- Thoroughly exfoliate all areas of your body to remove the dead layer of skin 24 hours before. A good exfoliation will ensure that your tan lasts as long as possible.
- 24 hours before the day of your tan, do not apply any lotion, oils or perfumes, as they will reduce your skinโs ability to absorb the tanning solution. Also, make sure that all make-up is removed before your tanning session. We recommend that you shave the day before you tan as well.
- You will need to remove any jewellery before you tan.
ย
After the Tan:
- Drink water directly after spending time in a tanning bed. Tanning can dehydrate the skin.
- Apply a good-quality moisturiser to your skin directly after tanning to help cool the skin and replenish moisture. All professional tanning products & Dermalogica moisturisers can be purchased at our reception area.
- Determining your skin type and duration of tanning sessions.
- We are born with our skin type and cannot change it! There are six basic categories of skin types. See if you can identify your skin type using the table below. Our beauty therapists can help you with that, too.
How do you determine your skin type?
Skin Type I
Usually bright white or pale skin, blue or green eyes, red hair and many freckles. This skin type always burns outdoors, and it never tans. NOTE: A person who is a true Skin Type I should avoid tanning indoors and outdoors.Skin Type II
Light Beige skin, blue or green eyes; blonde or light brown hair and maybe freckles. This skin type has a strong tendency to sunburn outdoors but sometimes tans.Skin Type III
Light brown skin, brown eyes and hair. This skin type sometimes burns outdoors but always tans.Skin Type IV
Light brown or olive skin, dark brown eyes and hair. This skin type sometimes burns outdoors and tans readily.Skin Type V
Brown skin, dark brown hair and eyes. This skin type rarely burns outdoors and tans easily.Skin Type VI
Black skin, black-brown eyes and hair. This skin type rarely sunburns outdoors. Please note: Although the chart above discusses skin type burning potential, you should always tan in moderation and avoid sunburning indoors (and out)!

If there are reddish skin tones or tenderness, customers are advised to wait until that goes away before tanning again.
Skin Types 4, 5 and 6: These skin types need to exercise caution on initial exposure. Initial exposure should also be moderate. This particularly applies if living in the UK, as the lack of regular exposure to sunshine depletes the natural skin protection factor.
